Tim Allen MD MCFP(EM) MA(Ed) is a Professor emeritus in the Department of Family and Emergency Medicine at Laval University . He practised emergency medicine in Québec City for most of his career, and during this time he developed a particular interest in defining and assessing clinical competence, both his own and that of others!
Tim is completing a mandate as the Director of Certification and Assessment at the College of Family Physicians of Canada. One of his main tasks has been to lead a shift to competency-based assessment, with a long-term goal of shifting away from structured examinations and simulated cases to assessment in the authentic workplace and daily practice. That is where the key to competence lies, in daily reflective and insightful practice in somewhat challenging circumstances. Where better to start this quest than in the emergency department!
